Apprenticeship Options

Employers value real working skills when they are selecting new employees and promoting existing ones. So apprentices who have worked for and achieved qualifications, as well as those who have gained work experience, will be in a good position to further their career.

Depending on your starting point, you will work towards an apprenticeship standard at level 3 or 5.

For technical qualifications, once you have achieved these awards you will be recognised as a qualified Vehicle Technician. You can then build on these awards through further training or education.

Skillnet will initially provide you with advice and guidance on how to start an automotive apprenticeship, and as you progress we will support you in further learning so you can develop your career to become a Senior Technician or Manager.

Skillnet also offers a range of non-technical qualifications. So whatever your interest, Skillnet can help.

Apprenticeship Benefits

There is a shortage of skilled technicians in the automotive industry. As cars, bikes and trucks become more advanced, the need for skilled repairers becomes ever greater.

Once you complete your automotive apprenticeship you will become a qualified technician with the option to develop your skills in a number of different areas. You could become a specialist technical expert, finding and fixing complex faults, or perhaps get involved in training and mentoring other technicians.

Alternatively, you can use the skills you gain as an apprentice to develop a career in parts, general management and a range of other disciplines. With a technical or non-technical qualification, as a qualified Apprentice, the world really is their oyster.

Whether they’re interested in automotive, mechanical, logistics or any of the other industries we work with, we offer a wide range of qualifications suitable for young people and adult learners alike.

Traineeships

A traineeship is an education and training programme with work experience that unlocks your potential and prepares you for your future career by helping you to become ‘work ready’.

The majority of Skillnet’s successful Trainees go on to a full time Apprenticeship training programme and employment with one of our clients.

FAQ's

AM I ELIGIBLE TO JOIN A SKILLNET APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAMME?

There are no set entry requirements for Apprenticeships. However, some of the employers we work with prefer applicants to have 3 GCSE passes (or their equivalents) at grade 4 or above.

WHAT HAPPENS IN THE APPLICATION PROCESS?

Our selection process is just like any other job application process. You will take an online initial assessment and be interviewed so we can see if you’re the right person for the employers we are recruiting for.

ARE THERE DIFFERENT TYPES OF APPRENTICESHIPS?

Depending on the career route you choose there are different types of Apprenticeship available. Which one is right for you will depend on your experience and the employment opportunities in your area. However, all Apprenticeships include the following basic elements:

  • Workplace “on the job” learning
  • “Off the job” learning (often online)
  • Maths, English and sometimes ICT qualifications
  • Assessments of your behaviours at work and during your studies
  • An End Point Assessment test

HOW LONG DOES AN APPRENTICESHIP TAKE?

Technical qualifications in the motor industry usually take between 2½ and 3 years. The length of time taken will depend on your ability and your employer’s requirements, but an Apprenticeship requires a large degree of commitment on your part.

HOW DO APPRENTICESHIPS WORK?

Your employer pays your wages and gives you on-the-job training which allows you to achieve your qualifications. You’ll spend time with your Skillnet Coach gaining key skills that will be useful in the job market – such as working in teams, problem-solving, communication and using new technology. You will also spend time studying your subject to give you further knowledge and understanding of your job. Usually you will attend one of our training sites for one day a week or in blocks of two weeks at a time, depending on your employers’ preferences.

HOW MUCH DO I GET PAID?

This depends on your employer. We advise them on rates for new Apprentices, and it’s often the same as for other new entrants to work.

WHAT SORT OF PERSON IS ACCEPTED ON AN APPRENTICESHIP?

You need to be:

  • Serious
  • Committed
  • Able to show you have fully researched the area of work you want to do to show you’re the right person for the job
  • Aware of your responsibilities to both yourself and your employer
  • Prepared for further study
  • Realistic about the amount of work you may have to do
  • Happy to work as both part of a team and an individual
  • Able to use your own initiative

Apprenticeships can be demanding, but very rewarding. It’s not just a question of seeing what is out there and then selecting a career path. It helps if you are focused enough to know what you want to do before you apply.

DO I GET HOLIDAYS?

Like all other employees, you will receive at least your statutory holiday entitlement. Your individual entitlement will be detailed in your terms of employment or training agreement. Just like any other job, your employer will have rules about how far in advance holidays need to be booked, and times that holidays cannot be taken.

WHAT QUALIFICATIONS WILL I GET WHEN I'VE FINISHED MY APPRENTICESHIP?

You’ll achieve an Apprenticeship Standard which has been agreed by employers to be the level you need to reach to be successful in your chosen career. For some Standards you can achieve the grades of Pass, Merit or Distinction.

HOW DO APPRENTICESHIP STANDARDS RELATE TO OTHER QUALIFICATIONS?

Apprenticeship standards are relatively new but they equate broadly to good A level passes. Some Universities will accept an Apprenticeship Standard as entry criteria for Degree courses.

AT WHAT AGE CAN I BECOME AN APPRENTICE?

There are many routes open to becoming an Apprentice and most are open to applicants of all ages. We are happy to provide more information if you call or email us
