To many people, one motor vehicle apprenticeship may seem the same as the next. However, that’s not so. Apprenticeships vary hugely, from cars to trucks, or technical apprenticeships through to office-based customer service.
For everything that a vehicle needs, and everything which can happen in a dealership, there is an apprenticeship.
In our series of ‘Meet the Apprentice’ we’ll meet real apprentices and let them explain what life is like for them. What they do, and why they do it.

Apprenticeship: Heavy Vehicle Apprentice Level 3
Can you summarise why you signed up for an Automotive Apprenticeship?
I’ve always been interested in cars and car engineering in general. After I left school, I started studying Light Vehicle mechanics at college. However, over time I realised I was more interested in the big stuff, Heavy Vehicles, so I decided to switch to a paid apprenticeship and learn all about them instead. It was a good move for me.
What’s the best bit about your Apprenticeship?
The satisfaction I get from fixing vehicles. It may be broken or wonky when it comes in, but it’s fixed when it goes out! It’s a good feeling and I learn a lot while I’m doing it. I’m getting more confident with it all the time.
I have a good mentor too. He sets high standards but makes sure I’ve got all the training and equipment I need to meet them.
The site I work at was awarded Service Dealer of the Year. It’s good being part of that team. Don’t get me wrong, I work hard, we all do, but we also have a fair bit of fun doing it. I actually look forward to coming into work.
What’s the one piece of advice you would give somebody thinking about starting an Apprenticeship?
Just do it, and push yourself to do your best. And ask questions – that’s what the coaches are for. It’s just a matter of your own will power.
Was ‘earning while learning’ important to you?
It’s very important because it meant I was able to pay for things I like, such as my phone bill. It’s better than university as I learn more by being hands-on rather than sitting in a classroom. Plus, they pay me, not the other way around!
What’s the best thing you have learnt while doing your Apprenticeship?
The work ethic. I admit I found it a bit unusual at first, but I get it now. What I put in, I get back.
What career do you hope to follow after you qualify?
I’m planning to study for apprenticeships in HGV Technician, moving up to Master Technician and one day, the boss!
