“Addressing drug challenges in health and humanitarian crises”
With the trade-in drugs already being recognised as a global problem at the beginning of the 20th century, a global solution was needed! The first international conference on narcotics was held in Shanghai as early as 1909. Over the years a system to control the trafficking and abuse of drugs was developed, 3 drug control conventions were adopted under the auspices of the UN & adherence to these is now almost universal.
On the 7th December 1987, the general assembly decided to observe the 26th of June as the international day against drug abuse and illicit trafficking to show strength and action in achieving the goal of an international society free of drug abuse.
Each year communities, organisations and individuals show their support all over the world in an attempt to raise awareness of this major global problem. Now more than ever people in all parts of the world are in need. The United Nations office on drugs and crime (UNODC) addresses existing and emerging drug challenges that have stemmed from situations of crisis. UNODC continues to advocate for the rights of the most vulnerable people who have drug abuse disorders and people who need access to controlled medicines.
This year’s theme is #Careincrises together we can work to raise awareness of the major problems that illicit drugs pose to society. Do your part by helping to raise awareness of the facts and help to engage others by using social media and conversation.
