International Women’s Day
#BreakTheBias
International Women’s day is celebrated annually on the 8th of March, the day is to commemorate the cultural, political and socio-economic achievements of women. The day is also a focal point for women’s rights. The UN first started celebrating the day in 1977!
This year’s theme is #BreakTheBias. Imagine a gender-equal world, free of bias, discrimination, and stereotypes. If we all work together, we can strive for women’s equality in a world that is diverse, equitable, and inclusive. As individuals, we are responsible for our own thoughts and actions so if we acted we could break the bias in our communities, workplaces, schools, colleges, and universities. We have the power to make a change!
The automotive industry is one of the most famously male-dominated work environments with only 33% of the industry being women! In 1888 Bertha Benz from Germany was married to Karl Benz the engineer who developed the first practical automobile in 1886. Bertha who was a marketing genius helped her husband bring his invention to the masses by completing the world’s first long distance road trip in a petrol powered car. Katharine Blodgett was a physicist and chemist and was the first woman to be awarded a Ph.D. in Physics in 1926. In 1938 she invented a non-reflecting glass which forms the basis of the technology which is now used on every car windscreen across the world!
Women are forging the way for a gender equal world and this shows at Skillnet too. By supporting our learners in and out of the workplace we can show the importance of inclusion and diversity for all our women learners and colleagues. Some of the most famous women played invaluable roles in influencing the world that we live in. At Skillnet we pride ourselves on equality, diversity, and inclusion and are proud of all our learners. Today however we want to celebrate all of our female learners past and present.
