An automotive apprenticeship teaches more than ‘engines’. Here, Heavy Vehicle Apprentice, Abhay, explains why he chose an apprenticeship over university and how the process has taught him more than he imagined: “It’s made me a lot more confident. And the way we are taught gets you to think through problems, rather than just ‘doing’. Basically, I feel more intelligent.”
Meet Abhay Gulati, Heavy Vehicle Apprentice

Apprenticeship title: Heavy Vehicle Apprentice
What do you like best about your Apprenticeship?
I love the independence I’m given. When I started I didn’t know anything about trucks whatsoever, but now I do: I’ve learned so much in the last few years.
What made you want to apply for this particular Apprenticeship?
My dad has his own trucks, so I’ve always been around them. I wanted to learn more about how they work and how to fix and maintain them.
Did you consider going to university?
Yes, I was focusing on Mechanical Engineering. But I wasn’t the biggest fan of the classroom element of learning. I enjoy the classroom work that we do, but prefer the hands-on approach.
In what ways has your Apprenticeship lived up to your expectations?
In every way. It’s exactly how I imagined it was going to be. As soon as I get into work in the morning, I work on trucks. All day, every day. I love it!
How supportive have your work colleagues been of you?
Very supportive. Anything I need help with, they help. At Ford & Slater, they have an Apprentice Co-ordinator who is very helpful, whether it’s to do with the job or college work.
For example, when I had a query around college work in my first year, all of the lads rallied around to help.
How supportive has your Skills Coach been?
Very supportive. If I ever need any help, the Skills Coach is always there. If I email him, he responds straight away.
What’s the most surprising thing you’ve learnt so far?
Engines, you’d think it’d be hard to learn, but it’s actually quite simple.
Has doing the Apprenticeship helped you in any other areas of your life?
It’s made me a lot more confident. And the way we are taught gets you to think through problems, rather than just ‘doing’. Basically, I feel more intelligent.
What are your career plans once you’ve completed your Apprenticeship?
To stay at Ford & Slater and then go self-employed in the future.
What would your advice be to someone who’s thinking of applying to do an Apprenticeship?
Definitely go for it. It’s the best way forward and a better way of learning rather than going to University. In University, you’re sat in a classroom all day, whereas by being an apprentice, you’re learning hands-on and gaining life skills along the way.
