Motor Vehicle apprenticeships can begin at any age, and straight from Year 11 is not uncommon. Matthew Hughes began his vehicle technician apprenticeship aged just 16.
Here he explains why Sixth Form was not for him, and how his apprenticeship has taught him more than he imagined.

Can you summarise why you signed up for an Automotive Apprenticeship?
I’ve always had an interest in mechanics. I heard DAF was the best, so I applied. I think I was right!
What’s the best bit about your Apprenticeship?
Teamwork and learning from my mates. When I’m in the workshop, I just really enjoy what I’m doing. And if I ever need any help, there’s always someone willing to explain something or give me a hand.
What’s the one piece of advice you would give somebody thinking about starting an Apprenticeship?
Take every opportunity you have to learn new skills. The Skills Coaches, and your colleagues are there to help you.
Was ‘earning while learning’ important to you?
Yes it’s important, but it wasn’t the deciding factor. A lot of kids my age stay in sixth form or go to college. For me though I wanted to get into, and learn about, automotive engineering and the best place is the workshop, doing an apprenticeship. Earning a salary is a nice bonus of course.
What’s the best thing you have learnt while doing your Apprenticeship?
I’ve learned more than I imagined I would. My knowledge of everything mechanical has improved massively. But so have my team working and communication skills. It’s all-round learning really.
What career do you hope to follow after your Apprenticeship ends?
Stay in the workshop and complete Level 4 Master Technician.
