Heavy Vehicle Apprentice Technician Level 3, Max Winter, explains how a change of tack, switching from an accountancy course at university to a Skillnet Automotive Apprenticeship, was a good decision: “I enjoy it more than expected. I like the fact that I’m constantly learning, and I like the hands-on side of it”.

Meet Max Winter

Apprenticeship: Heavy Vehicle Technician Level 3

Employer: Adams Morey Bournemouth

Can you summarise why you signed up for an Automotive Apprenticeship?

I’ve always been interested in big Machines. I heard about Skillnet and that piqued my interest, so I applied. They have vacancies all over the country but it helps that the company I work with is five minutes from where I live.

What do you like best about your Apprenticeship?

College is fantastic. It’s a lot more practical and hands-on. I enjoy the Skillnet modules alongside the college part too. I’m enjoying the apprenticeship more than expected. I like the fact that I’m constantly learning and I like the hands-on side of it.

How supportive have your work colleagues been of you?

Some of the older guys in particular have been really helpful and supportive. I can ask them anything and they help. And my Skills Coach, Andy, is great. He always responds to texts or emails. He keeps in regular contact and keeps everything on track. It’s all good.

What’s the most surprising thing you’ve learnt so far?

That I’m really suited to the job. I’ve always been a hands-on person, but not in this sense.

Has doing the apprenticeship helped you in any other areas of your life?

I’m a lot more confident now with fixing my own car. That saves me spending money at a garage!

What are your career plans once you’ve completed your Apprenticeship?

To stay on and train to a higher position.

What would your advice be to someone who’s thinking of applying to do an Apprenticeship?

If you like being a hands-on person, then this is a good career choice for you
