National Mentoring Day was created by Chelsey Baker, an award-winning business mentor to help encourage and celebrate mentoring in all its forms. Taking place every year on the 27th October to recognise and celebrate the benefits of mentoring. Their key message is to raise awareness of the rewarding and invaluable contribution that mentoring makes not only on the individuals themselves but also our economy and society as a whole.
National Mentoring Day’s aim is to encourage interactive discussions, events, social media activities for everyone to get involved, to showcase the benefits of being a mentor, and being mentored. Mentoring should be accessible to any individual, child, business, or group that needs it regardless of their age, background, or ethnicity. The aim is to educate, inspire, connect, and support mentoring, to effect positive change and elevate mentoring throughout the world. Everyone has a skill and experiences they can share. One conversation can be all that’s needed to make a positive change in someone.
Behind every successful person, there is a mentor who helped them along the way. Some of the most influential people in history were encouraged to succeed by some of the most well-known people of our time. Oprah Winfrey was mentored by celebrated author and poet, the late Maya Angelou. “She was there for me always, guiding me through some of the most important years of my life, mentors are important, and I don’t think anybody makes it in the world without some form of mentorship”
Yves Saint-Laurent became Christian Dior’s personal assistant learning the secret of the haute couture and how to run the company. “Dior fascinated me, I couldn’t speak in front of him, he taught me the basis of my art. Whatever was to happen next, I never forgot the years I spent at his side”.
